Root of Life or Root of Heaven...

Introduced to Europe in the 16th century, Ginseng (jen-sheng / man-life) gets its name from the shape of its root, the only part used therapeutically.

Indeed, its shape resembles that of a human: the swollen part of the plant forms the head and trunk; the branching parts represent the arms and lower limbs.

Ginseng is also called Panax Ginseng due to its many therapeutic effects. In fact, Panax comes from the Greek word Panakos, meaning "a remedy that cures everything." This is also where the word panacea comes from.
