Cellulite — Definition

Cellulite is the result of fat, toxins, and water becoming trapped in the hypodermis (the deep layer of the skin), leading to the formation of nodules — clusters of adipocytes — which are visible signs of the deformation of the subcutaneous connective tissue.

Cellulite — Mechanisms

The role of adipocytes. The hypodermis is composed of collagen fibres forming a compartmentalized network where adipocytes are housed. These cells convert fats and sugars into energy reserves and store them. When the balance between storage and release is disrupted, they can swell up to fifty times their normal volume and distort the "mesh" — hence the dimpled appearance of the skin.

The role of the lymphatic circulation. A deficiency in the venous and lymphatic systems promotes the accumulation of fluids and waste in the connective tissue. These then exert pressure on the vessels and on the adipocytes, which cluster into nodules and amplify the "orange peel" appearance. The trapped fat is then no longer metabolized or eliminated as easily.

Cellulite — Different Types

• Aqueous cellulite (water retention, oedema): Soft to the touch, due to a veno-lymphatic slowdown that creates an accumulation of water in the adipose tissue.

• Adipose cellulite: More compact, due to an increase in the size of adipocytes and the formation of micro-nodules.

• Fibrous or indurated cellulite: Hard to the touch, due to the hardening of collagen fibres around adipocytes grouped into macro-nodules.

Cellulite — Causes

• Poor diet is by far the primary cause. The modern diet, rich in chemical substances that the body does not recognise, promotes water retention: the body, in a defence mechanism, tries to dilute these substances and produces "sponge" molecules that hold onto water (aqueous cellulite).
• Poor venous and lymphatic circulation, which makes it difficult to eliminate water and waste.
• Excess weight promotes the appearance of adipose cellulite: the adipocytes that store fat under the skin enlarge and create the "orange peel" appearance.
• Alcohol, tobacco, contraceptives, and certain medications (tranquillizers, sleeping pills, painkillers) also influence the development of cellulite.
• Genetics and hormones also play a role. Women are naturally predisposed to storing fat, and a weak collagen structure in the connective tissue is a hereditary factor. Microcirculation, water retention, and fat distribution depend in part on hormones: puberty, pregnancy, the menstrual cycle, contraception, and menopause are all times when cellulite can appear or become established.

Directions for use

Massage Cellu-Quit twice daily onto the affected areas, for at least ten minutes. Complement the massage with full-hand pinching of the skin, in a "kneading-rolling" motion. Using a horsehair glove before application is an excellent preparatory step: it activates microcirculation and prepares the skin to receive the oil. Drink plenty of fluids (water, herbal tea) to support the draining action and eliminate waste. On average, one bottle applied to the thighs lasts three to four weeks.

A note on lifestyle

No treatment can replace movement. Fifteen to thirty minutes of regular physical activity (cycling, walking, gymnastics) helps build muscle mass and release stored fat, strengthens venous return and fluid circulation, and helps metabolize sugars and fats before they turn into cellulite.
